The Magic of "Living" Art: How Crystals Bloom in 1350°C Heat

To the untrained eye, the patterns on a Caiming Kiln crystalline vase might look like a master painter's delicate brushwork. But look closer. You’ll see a depth and a radial symmetry that no human hand could ever achieve.

In the world of Shiwan Dragon Kiln ceramics, we don't paint these flowers. We "grow" them.

1. The Science of the "Zinc-Silicate" Miracle
The secret behind our signature Crystalline Glaze (结晶釉) lies in a precise chemical dance. Our formula, inherited from the "Glaze King" Wu Zaosheng, is rich in zinc and silica.

When the kiln reaches its peak temperature of 1350°C (2462°F), the glaze turns into a molten, super-saturated liquid. As we begin the cooling process, the zinc and silica molecules start to find each other, bonding together to form microscopic seeds of crystals—much like how a single grain of dust becomes a snowflake in the clouds.

2. A Flower Born in the Dark
The most critical moment happens in the cooling phase. We must hold the kiln at specific "soaking" temperatures for hours.

The Growth: During this time, the crystals expand outward from their center. Depending on the temperature fluctuations, they can form shapes resembling blooming peonies, delicate frosted ferns, or even distant cosmic nebulas.

The Atmosphere: Because we use a Dragon Kiln, the wood fire creates a "Reduction Atmosphere" (oxygen-starved). This causes the metallic oxides in the glaze to change color—turning a standard red into a shimmering "Goldfish Red" or a deep "Starry Blue."

3. Captured in Time
The magic ends when the temperature drops below the crystallization point. The liquid glaze solidifies, "freezing" the crystals in their perfect state forever.

This is why every piece is a one-of-a-kind biological record of that specific fire. You can never get the same pattern twice. If the cooling is a few minutes too fast, the crystals won't grow; if it's too slow, the glaze will run off the pot.
