As wood-fired ceramics gain popularity, many "wood-effect" imitations created in gas or electric kilns have flooded the market. However, a true masterpiece from a Dragon Kiln possesses a soul that machine-made replicas can never mimic. Here is how you can tell the difference.
1. Inspect the "Ash Glaze"

Authentic : In a wood-fired kiln, pine wood ash flies through the air and fuses with the clay at 1300°C. The resulting "natural ash glaze" is layered, uneven, and often features a transition from matte to glossy. You might even see tiny, unmolten ash specks—the "sand" of time.

Imitation : Gas kiln imitations often have "sprayed-on" ash effects that look too uniform or repetitive. It lacks the organic depth of a 12-hour flame baptism.
2. Feel the "Fire Marks"

Authentic : Since the flames in a Dragon Kiln travel in a specific direction (from the head to the tail of the dragon), pieces often show a "windward" and "leeward" side. One side might be deeply scorched by fire (Fire Marks), while the other remains more subtle.

Imitation: Pieces fired in modern kilns are usually heated evenly from all sides, resulting in a monotonous color without the "story" told by the flame's path.
3. Look for "Kiln-Change" Depth
