How We Achieved Museum-Scale Crystalline Art
In the history of Shiwan Dragon Kiln ceramics, there was a long-standing "invisible ceiling" that haunted even the greatest masters: the 35cm limit.
For decades, if you saw an authentic, wood-fired crystalline glaze vase, it was almost always small. Why? Because the larger the piece, the more "temperamental" the crystals become. Today, at Caiming Kiln (彩明窑), we are proud to announce that this curse has been broken.
1. The Science of the "Shatter Zone"
Historically, crystalline glaze products were prone to a phenomenon known as "delayed shivering" or spontaneous cracking. Because the expansion coefficient of the crystal is different from the base clay, large vases (exceeding 35cm) would often explode inside the kiln or, even more heartbreakingly, crack weeks after being fired.
This technical defect meant that for nearly a century, large-scale wood-fired crystalline art was virtually non-existent. It was a "rich man's luxury" precisely because so few survived the fire.
2. The Breakthrough: Decades of Research
Our founder, Master Liang Peixing, and his son, Liang Yuzhang, refused to accept this limitation. Through hundreds of test firings in our Sihui Dragon Kiln, they developed a proprietary "Buffer Clay" and a unique cooling schedule that allows the crystals to grow without stressing the body of the vase.
-
The Result: We are now successfully producing crystalline masterpieces that stand 60cm, 80cm, and even 100cm tall. * The Record-Breaker: Our 82cm large platter, "High Crested Rooster" (高冠雄鸣), is a miracle of modern non-heritage craft, now permanently collected by the Chancheng Museum.
3. Why Size Matters for Collectors in London and New York
For interior designers and serious art collectors in global hubs like London, New York, and Sydney, size represents more than just dimensions—it represents Technical Mastery.
-
Presence: A 35cm vase is a desk accessory; a 70cm wood-fired crystalline vase is a Statement Piece that anchors an entire room.
-
Investment Value: Because these large-scale pieces are so difficult to produce in a wood-fired Dragon Kiln (where temperature control is manual), their rarity and value are significantly higher than standard-sized works.
4. A New Era for Shiwan Art
By breaking the size barrier, Caiming Kiln has opened a new chapter in Chinese ceramic history. We are no longer limited by the "defects" of the past. We are taking the 1,000-year-old Dragon Kiln tradition and scaling it for the grandest modern spaces.
When you purchase a large-format piece from our Shopify store, you are owning a record-breaker. You are owning the moment when the "Dragon" finally allowed us to dream big
